چکیده

Here, we present a novel mechanism for cell trapping using microscale laminar vortices containing stable and predictable recirculating fluid flow. Particles larger than the critical size cut-off migrate laterally through fluid streamlines and orbit within the vortex while smaller particles follow fluid streamlines and travel out of the device. Larger particles were measured to experience shear gradient lift forces of up to 0.21μN while entering the vortex. We envision this technique as a method for on-chip rapid exchange of various solutions around cells, that yields a result identical to centrifugation and may prove useful for flow cytometry at the point-of-care.

Enhanced size-dependent trapping of particles using microvortices.

Inertial microfluidics has been attracting considerable interest for size-based separation of particles and cells. The inertial forces can be manipulated by expanding the microchannel geometry, leading to formation of microvortices which selectively isolate and trap particles or cells from a mixture. In this work, we aim to enhance our understanding of particle trapping in such microvortices by...

High-throughput size-based rare cell enrichment using microscale vortices.

Cell isolation in designated regions or from heterogeneous samples is often required for many microfluidic cell-based assays. However, current techniques have either limited throughput or are incapable of viable off-chip collection. We present an innovative approach, allowing high-throughput and label-free cell isolation and enrichment from heterogeneous solution using cell size as a biomarker....

Dynamic particle trapping, release, and sorting by microvortices on a substrate.

This paper examines particle trapping and release in confined microvortex flows, including those near a solid surface due to variations in the electrokinetic slip velocity and those at a liquid-gas interface due to an external momentum source. We derive a general analytical solution for a two-dimensional microvortex flow within a semicircular cap. We also use a bifurcation theory on the kinetic...

Microfluidic Vortex Enhancement for on-Chip Sample Preparation

In the past decade a large amount of analysis techniques have been scaled down to the microfluidic level. However, in many cases the necessary sample preparation, such as separation, mixing and concentration, remains to be performed off-chip. This represents a major hurdle for the introduction of miniaturized sample-in/answer-out systems, preventing the exploitation of microfluidic’s potential ...

Rapid generation and manipulation of microfluidic vortex flows induced by AC electrokinetics with optical illumination.

We demonstrate a rapid generation of twin opposing microvortices (TOMVs) induced by non-uniform alternating current (AC) electric fields together with a laser beam on a patterned pair of indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. A fast and strong jet flow region between twin microvortices is also generated. Its pattern and direction, such as whether it is symmetric or asymmetric, are controlled mainly...
